black sun is mire lee’s first american solo museum exhibition at the new york new museum and presents a site-specific installation in which kinetic sculptures are shown within a dystopic-architectural staging. the installation displays motors, pumping systems, and plastic hoses with various fillings such as grease, glycerin, silicone, clay slip, or oil, and is regarded as a decisive work for lee’s international success. black sun has direct references to julia kristeva’s 1987 work soleil noir, in which the bulgarian-french psychoanalyst, semiotician, and literary scholar illuminates the phenomenon of depression and melancholy from psychoanalytic, language-philosophical, and art-theoretical perspectives. the title stems from gérard de nerval’s poem el desdichado (the black sun of melancholy). this theoretical framework runs through the entire spatial installation as an immersively claustrophobic conception. walls and ceilings are interwoven with mesh and fabric structures as well as steel beams; skin-like elements of silicone and clay hang beside hoses pumping endlessly in the room, occasionally dripping, whose technical operation appears improvised rather than functionally industrial — like a collection of eviscerated organs kept artificially alive.

critics highlight the visceral-emotional impact of the disturbing work, above all how small the difference between functional mechanics and biological tissue appears in lee’s work. hoses and encrustations evoke associations with blood circulation, saliva, or discharge, and, referencing kristeva’s book, these slimy, spitting, and slowly solidifying installations are seen as an attempt to materialize emotional states such as despair, desire, or numbness; soundless fascination alternates with gurgling disgust. this strikingly affected reaction reveals how deeply the zeitgeist moves in ever tighter loops away from a grievous reality, meeting common dystopic clichés only with agitated rejection or skeptical fascination. in an amalgam of h.r. giger’s biomechanics, cronenberg’s body horror, and industrially decaying set pieces, an art world increasingly overrun by digital over-smoothing, artificial image worlds, and immaterial discourses experiences in lee’s works a physical shock as an affective-instinctive self-experience. disgust and anxiety in the face of a canonization of the abject, disgusting, and cast-out, alongside the pleasurable blurring of the boundary between subject and object, provide posthumanist-psychoanalytic discourses as a highly coded symbol for unprocessed trauma and mental crises.

clean technology has to be invisible, efficient, simply flawless, and lee’s sculptural gut-aesthetic lays bare this promise of technology by fueling collective fears of the future. the attempt of an insecure public to aesthetically and culture-cultivatingly dissolve its own helplessness will not succeed by shivering in awe at what, deep inside, one actually neither can nor wants to deal with.
