„mona hatoum wants to use contradictions, play with ambiguities and never mistake anything for what it seems to be“ describes a text the artist. in contrast to louise bourgeois’ artistic interpretation of the spider as an archaic maternal power she prefers her own translation of the topic, to formulate her own vocabulary with the terms net, bond, vulnerability and control – also her material preference prefers glass instead of bronze or steel to direct the focus from confrontation to fragility. the 2006 work web consists of transparent crystal spheres – hanging from low-arranged steel wires, and operating with the association to dewdrops – which are staged deeply enough to form at the same time a field and an enclosing, nest-like environment. the work is newly realized multiple times, most recently 2026 as part of over, under and in between as a site-specific project for the milanese fondazione prada – presented as one of three installations that theme the in her artistic vocabulary recurring archetypal element net, alongside map and grid.

instability, danger and fragility, hatoum uses this motif regularly to explore themes of captivity, inactivity, neglect, familial bonds and connectedness. „a net can be seen as a threatening tangle that suggests oppressive captivity, but at the same time offers a home or a safe place. for me, the large net above me also has a poetic, even cosmic meaning. the beautiful, delicate glass spheres remind of dewdrops and evoke their fragility and sparkle. they also resemble a constellation. i personally see in it an allusion to the connectedness of all things.“ so the artist in her own words. the use of softer elements forms the central difference to bourgeois, whose work maman occupies the spider as an oversized, metallic monument of maternal ambivalence in massive physical presence.

hatoum’s web is also expansive, but does not create this form of monumentality in the least. her material is mouth-blown fragile glass, and we encounter no prey situation or the function net as a trap – the work is depicted as an oscillation between attraction and threat, between protective space and trap. so we hang now lined up next to friendly water drops on a net, the sun smiles friendly and the hurriedly approaching spider as well. hatoum’s ostensibly dreamily sweet staging insidiously fakes a non-endangerment and turns the conceptual tables not only through the choice of material. bourgeois talks about protection, hatoum conveys it, but without actually meaning it.
