feeling, seeing and understanding are essential prerequisites for creative work, according to the ‚architecturtailer and stationist‘ heinz witthoeft, his oeuvre therefore consists of a multitude of compelling and interlinked principles. among other things, he states that modernism has so far failed to deliver an urban planning model that fits our society. the sentence structure reveals more about the mindset than the content itself, it contains three variables, none of which receives a clear definition – modernism is handled as a uniformly acting subject, equipped with an imaginary task which it is not in a position to fulfill. related to the core of the statement, this modernism is by no means as homogeneous, either architecturally or urbanistically, as the text describes it, le corbusier, mies van der rohe and frank lloyd wright all reject historical decoration, but at the same time represent completely opposite positions on the topics of urban planning, nature and a social role that architecture should assume. a singular urban planning model fitting our society likewise corresponds to a factual simplification – as a correct model corresponding to a correct form – everything just needs to be found or designed, then everything is fine. witthoeft’s attitude corresponds to a deeply felt modernist premise with the idea that social complexity can be represented through a single coherent system.

his critique of modernism corresponds to a figure of thought that originates from modernism itself and formulates a core-stable, unifying and justifying principle as the narrative basis of an individual body of work spanning several decades. if one accepts that this missing model exists, it logically follows that it can also be designed by a single person. witthoeft offers diagnosis and solution in a totalizing logic and becomes a case study for the aspect that utopian city designs sometimes do not emerge as a counter-model to modernism, but rather form its consistent continuation. equating creator and work seems to undergo ever greater difficulties along the timeline, but witthoeft’s stumbling block does not correspond to an inappropriate misconduct but to his very own, unwieldy attitude itself. witthoeft is a bruddler, that’s what people call rather critical people in the stuttgart area, where he is mainly active. the visionary designs a formal construct corresponding to bauhaus thinking, which consists of a square timber penetrated with regular, horizontal and vertical boreholes, from which he can combine all furniture variants. whether shelf, table or seating furniture, witthoeft designs a functional systematic design common around the 1950s, which finds parallels in poul cadovius’s royal system wall unit module presented for the first time in 1948. witthoeft, for all his architectonic-constructivist rigor, is a friend of wordplay and juggles with the concepts of part and detail.

his probably best-known product is tail 4 from the year 1959/60, which is understood on the principle of a modular system as both furniture and architecture and consists of a minimalist system of standardized individual parts. the frame itself is made of square spruce timbers, the elements are held together by strikingly distinctive metal connectors developed by witthoeft and the suspended seat surface consists of natural or black-dyed bridle leather or fabric, flexibly clamped into the wooden skeleton by means of straps. even almost seventy years after its development, tail 4 is a gladly traded object of modern design ideals at auctions and online portals, whose designer as well as his historical background nevertheless remains almost in the dark. witthoeft’s quasi-undiscovered position is explained in retrospect by his strictly set control mania, out of which he does not want to give production out of his hands, and therefore no licenses for mass production of his system furniture exist. witthoeft stands for a functional-handicraft manufacture principle, with which only few and far more business-savvy producers manage to succeed. simplicity of construction, clarity of means and purity of material, one can hardly express mies van der rohe’s statement more clearly. unrecognized geniuses – there are too many of them. witthoeft stems from a ‘me against god and god against everyone’ post-war generation that can only flourish in its individual mythology – and he accomplishes this balancing act masterfully, without any interest in a posthumous cult of personality.
