in his column „mitgehört“, martin raabenstein interviews various people about what drives them musically. from formative moments to current highlights: the jukebox of the filter collective becomes more colorful with each episode. kicking off 2019 is kerem gokmen from pittsburgh, who dedicates his life to music and environmental conservation.
dear kerem, would you like to introduce yourself briefly?
i originally come from istanbul but have been living in the usa for a long time. since 1998, i have hosted a weekly radio show here in pittsburgh. „dubmission“ runs for four hours and airs every saturday night on wyep, an independent station in pennsylvania that has been around since 1974. in the show, i regularly play a wide range of music, from broken, soul, downtempo, and jazz to house, funk, techno, hip-hop, offbeat, glitch, disco, and leftfield. additionally, i dj regularly at various bars and clubs. during the day, i work at clean water action, a nonprofit organization that advocates for environmental protection in general and for clean water and sustainable management in particular.
what are you currently working on? what interrupts your flow here?
i’m working on the next episode of the radio show.
what music are you enjoying at the moment?
mainly jazz, or a mix of everything. my current favorite is „nicola conte presents cosmic forest – the spiritual sounds of mps.“
what is special for you about this music? you must have a personal story to tell about it.
i greatly appreciate the history of the mps label. 50 years in the business, jazz curated in the black forest, and founded by an absolute enthusiast who also took care of the recordings and advanced the music direction. that says it all. additionally, there’s the italian nicola conte, who approached jazz from a completely different angle and rode the acid jazz wave. on this compilation, he delved into the label’s back catalog and selected his favorites from the period of 1965 to 1975. conte is one of my favorite producers – watching him work with mps is an additional highlight.
do you generally spend a lot of time with music?
according to my wife, far too much! when i’m not listening to promos, i’m constantly tuned in to various online radio stations – nts, worldwide fm, balamii, or netil radio. i also enjoy playing vinyl or randomly selected cds while i work, and i often listen to spotify through my headphones during workouts.
how do you prefer to listen to music? concentrated in front of the stereo system or, for example, with headphones?
it always depends on the situation. i use various media: my phone, macbook, and my dj tools when producing shows. my favorite is the „aiaiai tma-2 modular“ headphones – in the „ghostly“ edition.
what is your earliest tonal memory?
i remember being obsessed with michael jackson’s „thriller“ as a young child. my parents had to teach me to handle albums carefully and not treat them like toys back in the ’80s. nowadays, i’m very careful with my albums and promptly store them in sleeves before they go into the archive.
your all-time favorite? track or album?
„missing“ by everything but the girl and „licensed to ill“ by the beastie boys.

Den Auftakt 2019 macht Kerem Gokmen aus Pittsburgh, der sein Leben der Musik und dem Umweltschutz widmet.
Lieber Kerem, magst du dich zunächst kurz vorstellen?
Ich stamme ursprünglich aus Istanbul, lebe aber schon lange in den USA. Schon seit 1998 habe ich hier in Pittsburgh eine wöchentliche Radioshow. „Dubmission“ geht vier Stunden lang und wird jede Samstagnacht auf WYEP ausgestrahlt, einem unabhängigen Sender in Pennsylvania, den es bereits seit 1974 gibt. In der Show spiele ich regelmäßig eine große Bandbreite an Musik, von Broken, Soul, Downtempo und Jazz über House, Funk, Techno, Hiphop, Offbeat, Glitch, Disco bis zu Leftfield, Funk und Dub. Zudem lege ich regelmäßig als DJ in verschiedenen Bars und Clubs auf. Tagsüber arbeite ich bei Clean Water Action, einem Nonprofit, das sich für den Umweltschutz im Allgemeinen und für sauberes Wasser und nachhaltigen Umgang damit im Besonderen einsetzt.

Was hörst du zur Zeit gerne?
Vor allem Jazz, oder querbeet. Mein aktueller Favorit ist „Nicola Conte presents Cosmic Forest – The Spiritual Sounds of MPS“.
Was ist das Besondere für dich an dieser Musik? Dazu hast du doch bestimmt eine persönliche Geschichte zu erzählen.
Ich schätze zunächst die Geschichte des MPS-Labels sehr. 50 Jahre im Geschäft, Jazz – kuratiert im Schwarzwald und gegründet von einem absoluten Enthusiasten, der sich auch noch um die Aufnahmen kümmerte und einiges voran brachte für die Musikrichtung. Das sagt schon alles. Dazu kommt der Italiener Nicola Conte, der den Jazz ja aus einer ganz anderen Ecke heraus anging und auf der Acid-Jazz-Welle schwamm. Auf dieser Compilation hat er sich intensiv mit dem Backcatalogue des Labels beschäftigt und seine Favoriten aus der Periode von 1965 bis 1975 zusammengestellt. Conte ist einer meiner Lieblingsproduzenten – zu beobachten, wie er mit MPS arbeitet, ist ein zusätzliches Highlight.
Verbringst du generell viel Zeit mit Musik?
Nach Aussage meiner Frau viel zu viel! Wenn ich mir nicht gerade Promos anhöre, bin ich ständig auf allen möglichen Online-Radiostationen unterwegs – NTS, Worldwide FM, Balamii oder Netil Radio. Ich mag es auch Vinyl aufzulegen, oder ganz zufällig gegriffene CDs zu hören, während ich arbeite und – ich höre sehr gerne beim Workout Spotify über meinen Kopfhörer.
Wie hörst du denn am liebsten Musik? Also konzentriert vor der Stereoanlage oder zum Beispiel unter dem Kopfhörer?
Das hängt immer ganz von der Situation ab. Ich benutze die unterschiedlichsten Medien: mein Telefon, das MacBook und eben meine DJ-Tools, wenn ich Shows produziere. Mein Liebling ist der „AIAIAI TMA-2 Modular“-Kopfhörer – in der „Ghostly“-Edition.
Deine älteste tonale Erinnerung?
Ich erinnere mich, dass ich als kleines Kind wie besessen von Michael Jacksons „Thriller“ war. Meine Eltern mussten mir beibringen, sorgsam mit Alben umzugehen und sie nicht wie Spielzeuge zu behandeln, damals in den 80ern. Heute hingegen bin ich sehr sorgfältig mit meinen Alben und packe sie umgehend in Sleeves, bevor sie ins Archiv wandern.
Und dein All-time-favourite? Track oder Album?
„Missing“ von Everything But The Girl und „Licensed To Ill“ von den Beastie Boys.
