alfonso, from the area around caserta in campania, moves to northern italy to work at fiat in turin. grown up without much connection to peasant work or traditional, rural values, he sees himself rather as parasitic and living off casual jobs and minor cons. after a short description of his childhood and youth in southern italy, he begins earning his money on the assembly line at fiat mirafiori. here he experiences the classic alienation of factory work, the monotony of the machine and the resulting rhythm that dictates the body to the process, as well as the hierarchical foremen. unionists and communists he meets initially with mocking distrust and sees in them only another controlling element of the system, no different from the factory itself. over time his attitude changes, and through daily harassment and the collective experience of exploitation, a class consciousness grows in him that develops out of his own experience and independent of union schooling, ripened out of his own experience and anger.
the novel culminates in the wild strike waves at fiat during the autunno caldo of 1969, in which the workers take control of the struggles themselves, since the unions along with the pci demand only better wages and working conditions, while the workforce stands for a total rejection of factory work as such. the operaio massa stands here as a new, young and uneducated subject coming from the south, opposite the discipline and identification with work of a classic skilled-worker culture of the north, and behaves for that very reason many times more radically. balestrini writes vogliamo tutto as a monological first-person account, without chapters, little punctuation and at high tempo. the style interprets spoken material from interviews with a real fiat worker, and the author emphasizes here that he deliberately uses no literary language but montages linguistic material, entirely in the spirit of the operaist and neo-avant-garde ideas of the time. balestrini works until 1972 as an editor for giangiacomo feltrinelli’s publishing house, his biography is exemplary for an italian postwar generation whose confrontation with a fascist police and administrative apparatus flows into the protests of the 1960s.
together with antonio negri he founds the group potere operaio in 1968, which, comparable to many other radicalized, western european ‘68 movements, holds the belief that a militant class-struggle movement in the factories enables a better society. just as joschka fischer at the opel plant in rüsselsheim, in a revolutionary struggle, tries to mobilize the assembly-line worker but fails against his resistance, the majority not wanting to demand change but rather preferring to keep building cars obediently, the struggle for the factories slowly collapses under state repression on one hand and concessions and offers on the other – the transformation of the old into a new labor movement fails miserably. potere operaio is the organization of the extra-parliamentary italian left, which from 1971 has an armed section with lavoro illegale and, the brigate rosse excepted, counts as the most radical grouping of the left and is correspondingly isolated. with the death of a central financial supporter, giangiacomo feltrinelli, in 1972, its crisis-ridden end is foreshadowed; after a fire with fatal consequences, its dissolution is decided in 1973. the noble goal of organizing workers’ struggles autonomously and independently of unions and the italian communist party comes to a meager end.
