the science fiction drama ‚contact‘ by robert zemeckis, released in 1997, clearly describes how contact with another civilization is established through a wormhole. starring jodie foster and matthew mcconaughey and penned by exobiologist and seti expert carl sagan, it explores the vision of a journey through curved spacetime.
like sagan, who was responsible for the peaceful messages attached as plaques to the interstellar probes pioneer 10 and 11 for potential extraterrestrial intelligence, the works of gisoo kim send a message of cultural intercommunication between two origins: her native korea and her adopted home of essen, germany. akin to an experimental model, translating albert einstein’s wormhole theory into three-dimensional works, the artist bends and folds photographic prints and sews them together with needle and thread; works remaining on a flat plane are also threaded. the resulting sculptural collages create an extremely sensitive, fragile-looking space on their west-east journey around the globe.
no longer purely photography, not yet quite architecture, they form a third category in their aesthetic reflection of contemporary deconstruction and reconfiguration. fragments of human memory, set at irregular intervals, want to be held by the thread just as the photographed space that surrounds them in folds. this thread, kim’s constitutive element, shares only partly with the metaphorical red thread that connects everything. while the artist’s world takes shape through this technique, it also reveals a finiteness where the thread breaks and everything falls apart.
