music is anything you listen to …
… with the intention of listening to music

luciano berio originates from a family of organists, a war injury to his hand permanently prevents him from professional piano playing and so he quickly turns to composition alongside this instrument. luigi dallapiccola awakens his interest in serial music at the beginning of the nineteen-fifties, bruno maderna introduces him to the summer courses for new music in darmstadt which he attends from 1954 to 1959. with maderna berio co-founds the studio di fonologia musicale milano specifically for electronic music at the rai broadcaster in 1955, works there among others with henri pousseur and john cage and is editor of the journal for electronic music incontri musicali from 1956 to 1960. in the major dispute between pierre schaeffer in paris and karlheinz stockhausen working in cologne berio occupies a third position that rejects both as orthodox and reductionist. schaeffer and his musique concrète he distrusts, the objet sonore and „écoute réduite“ as positivist fiction. the idea that a sound can be heard „in itself“ detached from sound source and connotation constitutes a perceptual-theoretical impossibility for him. listening, according to berio, is always associative and semantic and voice or bell cannot be detached from its history, and accordingly he clearly negates schaeffer’s phenomenological bracketing. additionally he shows skepticism towards stockhausen’s claim of serial totalism, according to which pitch, duration, timbre and dynamics could all be subjected to the same numerical logic.
berio exposes here an explicitly ideological overextension according to which a compositional method is confused with a description of what sound can in truth mean. cologne purism to use only synthetic and no impure sounds and the parisian way of insisting on found sounds he joins together laughing into an own path and declares the two other combatants dogmatists. with thema (omaggio a joyce) berio sets an explicit manifesto of this synthesis in 1958 – by treating the concrete material of a recorded voice like serially-electronically transformed material, based on the phonetic structure of james joyce’s text itself as compositional logic, sound and meaning come together instead of having to be sorted into natural versus synthetic. berio’s approach shifts the entire scenario by positioning not concrete against electronic, but semantic-associative against abstract. in 1968 berio consistently continuing presents with sinfonia a work that has long ceased to have anything to do with the schaeffer-stockhausen scuffle – here studios with tapes do not fight, but a real orchestra presents the composition together with eight amplified voices, the swingle singers. in the third movement the conceptual key opens up in which the scherzo from mahler’s second symphony serves as a supporting framework over which a dense network of citations from bach, beethoven, debussy, ravel, strauss, stravinsky, schoenberg, berg and boulez as well as a spoken text from samuel beckett’s the unnamable is spread.
this is no serial organization of parameters and no objet sonore, but a clear collage as a compositional principle in which meaning develops through recognition – reference and combinatorics in which the listener actively follows the connections. berio’s inviting openness forms obviously the reason for the lasting repertoire viability of the work as one of the few and outstanding examples of that highly experimental era. schaeffer’s reductionist material concept and stockhausen’s serial system are too much trapped in specific technological and ideological conditions of their time and age poorly in a way against berio’s very readable citation and collage procedure. collective cultural memory and recognizability work in 1968 as today on reference knowledge and this third movement is based on that as a clearly recognizable calculation, in so far sinfonia is the practical fulfillment of what berio accuses both schaeffer and stockhausen of as early as 1958 – both models suppress the semantic dimension of listening and thus remain as historically museal highlights but not as living lived experience. sinfonia originates in 1968 as a commission of the new york philharmonic for their 125th anniversary, dedicated to leonard bernstein, which berio himself conducts – in a highly institutional public-facing framework and not as an autonomous studio experiment. he knows very well how to use a citation collection of classical composers communicatively for a subscription audience of the philharmonic. that corresponds to functional calculation, but equally to a compositional one in the service of his own aesthetics and not to a grandstanding gesture against his own conviction.
