when my grandmother smugly proclaimed that anyone who tries to do everything can only do half of it, she would have been proven wrong if she had got to know monique recknagel and her world. the multidisciplinary publisher and label owner combines craftsmanship with design in an elegantly minimalist way and presents her products in an equally stylish shop, which she also uses as a gallery to exhibit her artist friends. in addition to the releases of her label sonic pieces and those of her partner, miasmah boss erik skodvin, a fine selection from the musical fields of post-classic, ambient, experimental and noise is also on offer here.
in her book publications you will find the same loving bookbinding finesse as in the vinyl editions of her label, which she is successfully running for its 15th anniversary this year. the catcalls that can be heard in many places about the sometimes devastating effects of the pandemic on the creative scene are nowhere to be found here, the times have also shaken monique recknagel, but the flag still hangs high and flies friendly above her shop entrance. it is pointless to speculate, but it can be assumed that a factor for a certain stability is also formed by her handmade quality and continuity.
trust is the magic word and passion the driving force when a tight-knit fan base pushes through the door on release day and there are quite a few present who proudly report having sonic pieces complete on their shelves. anyone who feels reminded of snow white and the seven dwarves is overdoing it; this is not a projection of a past, happy world into the here and now, and yet, recknagel’s calm and serenity permeates every fibre of her workspace. with a hot or cold drink in front of her shop, in the small schöneberg square, the transformation of a cultural product into a mediating lifestyle takes place and the addictive factor here is certainly not only in the pastries that are served.

Wenn meine Großmutter süffisant verkündete, „Wer versucht, alles zu können, kann alles nur halb“, wäre sie eines Besseren belehrt worden, hätte sie Monique Recknagel und ihre Welt kennengelernt. Die multidisziplinäre Herausgeberin und Labeleignerin vereint auf elegant-minimalistische Weise Handwerk mit Gestaltung und präsentiert ihre Produkte in einem ebenso ausgestalteten Ladengeschäft, das sie auch als Galeristin zur Ausstellung befreundeter Künstler nutzt. Hier werden neben den Releases ihres Labels Sonic Pieces und denen ihres Partners, des Miasmah-Chefs Erik Skodvin, auch eine feine Auswahl aus den musikalischen Bereichen Post-Classic, Ambient, Experimental und Noise angeboten.
In ihren Buchpublikationen findet sich die gleiche, liebevolle buchbinderische Finesse wie in den Vinyl-Editionen ihres Labels, das sie dieses Jahr erfolgreich zum 15. Jubiläum führt. Den vielerorts zu vernehmenden Katzenjammer über die teilweise verheerenden Auswirkungen der Pandemie auf die kreative Szene sucht man hier vergebens. Die Zeiten haben auch Monique Recknagel geschüttelt, aber die Fahne hängt noch hoch und weht freundlich über ihrem Ladeneingang. Es ist müßig, hier Spekulationen anstellen zu wollen, aber es lässt sich vermuten, dass sich ein Faktor für eine gewisse Stabilität auch durch ihre händisch hergestellte Qualität und Kontinuität bildet.
Vertrauen ist das Zauberwort und Leidenschaft die Triebfeder, wenn sich eine fest eingeschworene Fangemeinde am Veröffentlichungstag durch die Türe drängelt. Und es gibt nicht wenige hier, die stolz vermelden, Sonic Pieces komplett im Regal stehen zu haben. Wer sich an Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge erinnert fühlt, überzieht das Bild; das ist keine Projektion einer vergangenen, glücklichen Welt in das Hier und Jetzt. Und doch, Recknagels Ruhe und Gelassenheit durchdringen jede Faser ihrer Wirkstätte. Mit einem Warm- oder Kaltgetränk vor ihrem Laden, an dem kleinen Schöneberger Platz, vollzieht sich der Wandel eines kulturellen Produktes zu einem vermittelnden Lebensstil, und der Suchtfaktor hierin besteht mit Sicherheit nicht nur im mitgereichten Gebäck.
